How to take care of a PEG Tube
A PEG tube is a tube inserted Endoscopically into the stomach through the abdomen.
Care of your PEG tube and skin
- Use a clean cloth and tap water to wash around your PEG tube. In case of a caregiver, caregiver should ensure clean hands when handling the PEG tube
- Clean the skin and PEG site with a clean cloth daily.
- Some discoloration of the tube is normal and does not affect its ability to deliver feed.
- Rotate (turn) the tube completely each day.
- Do not put dressings under the PEG tube flap unless instructed to.
- PEG feeding Pipe can be fixed to abdomen with the help of soft dressing tapes
- Hang the feeding ports in an upright position over abdomen.
- Flush your PEG tube after each feed
What to feed through the PEG tube:Liquids- Water, Coconut water, juices, milkShakes and smoothies – Well blended without chunks of food/fruits/nuts/vegetables Blended kitchen feeds : Well cooked blended vegetables mixed which is liquid enough to be pushed through the tube . Flush the tube with water after every use. AVOID Chunky/hard/ semicrushed/gelatinous/sticky food to be given through the PEG tube as it can block it.
How to give medicines through the PEG tube :
- Liquids:
- Most liquid medicine may be given through a PEG tube.
- Pills
- Some pills cannot be given after crushing – check with your doctor before crushing it.
- First,crush the pill between two spoons (or use a pill crusher) to make a fine powder.
- Mix the powder in water and make sure it dissolves completely and flush it through the tube
